i was a street rat as a kid, in a very "eat or be eaten" city got the shit beaten out of me more times than i can even count before my voice broke bruises aren't special, leo
( this fight was different. but not any different than all the weird and different shit jason got himself into on a daily basis anyway. )
( jason wears his scars with pride. boasts about all the crappy things that's happened to him to show they don't hurt him, that he's strong. that nothing can tear him down. sharing bits and pieces of his childhood to accent that further doesn't bother him in the slightest. )
you should tell me about it sometime your tragic backstory
[ the way jason carries himself is admirable, nearly enviable. fitz needs to figure out what kind of man he is first, before he takes any such pride in how he survived. ]
Maybe when we're both off the heavy painkillers and back on drinks.
[ belatedly admitting he was injured more seriously w/e ]
( a few beers, nothing serious enough to get him drunk drunk, but--jason doesn't like the haze that comes with painkillers. especially not in a place like this, where he can't trust jack shit. )
i'm worried about your liver, leo you taking good care of it?
( he'd be more bothered if he didn't claim family to tim drake, professional stalker and damian wayne: professional ruiner of all sense of private space. )
ever consider maybe a lot of the banter is on purpose? what have you picked up from your friends?
[ the bulk of his data on the waynes has come from the family itself, directly or indirectly. only snatches of observation came from elsewhere. damian said he opened someone up, and katelin saw jason with the bandages suggestive of him being that someone. daisy mentioned his name, when she sent over the selfie of them, which gave him the visual he needed, too (at the cost of her likely showing some candid camera shots of fitz himself), and bobbi confirmed his identity with a spy's eye description. ]
Piecemeal information like that can't stand up on its own. Made any counter observations lately?
[ Fitz is very open on the network, with everything from his job at SHIELD, various specialities (engineering, programming, quantum physics, a dash of forensics) to his birthday and partner (Jemma Simmons, biochemist) publicly available. Even some classified SHIELD projects have been discussed. Daisy's not an explicit agent, but she makes no effort to deny it. Katelin's supposedly a friend of Fitz's from university. And they've confirmed they live together, if nothing else. ]
( a lot of it is just for show. it establishes a presence around his name, an expectation. it gets his own ID out there in the open, which. should be plenty to get the attention of anyone from his own side of the universe who has any insider knowledge about bats himself. that's what he was after, what he wants. but. )
you're open to the point it's suspicious you're not trying to hide shit, which just makes it even more obvious that you're hiding something more important. details you're not sharing, something deeper. darker, i'm guessing. bits you don't want anyone looking into, so you give up what seems like 'everything' to keep people from getting a closer look
[ part of fitz's movements follow similar designs, drawing the heat for team SHIELD. it helps that he likes to hear himself talk.
it doesn't help that he isn't always in control — that sometimes he does things and doesn't know why, or that he's doing them until — well, they're done. is that what i'm doing? a shut book that fakes being open is unlikely to invite close-reading. jason presents an apt analysis on the whole, and a bold one, informing his self-perception as much as how he thinks others view him. (he wonders if daisy and bobbi can't see as clearly because they're standing too close).
( but not because he's still looking. he is, always is. checks the network obsessively for any word or sign of something, but this isn't that. )
i trust grayson's judgement
( not to the point he won't continue keeping a close eye on fitz. but enough he's not going to sit here and grill him on shit. or ask questions, which could just lead to more questions being asked of himself and jason doesn't want to put up with that. )

If my liver couldn't take it, I'd have to turn in my British passport.
